Father has been steadily going down hill for some time. Getting weaker, more unsteady, not eating much and sleeping around 80+% of the time. Brain function has been bad for some time and he has a tough time getting sentences out at all, even ones that make no sense. We had bought a motion detector to let us know when he was coming out of their bedroom in the middle of the night, due to him going into the kitchen and getting into stuff and sometimes leaving the fridge open. We recently had to buy a bed sensor and alarm to make sure we are alerted to him getting up due to fall risks. Lately he has been up more in the middle of the night and we found him on the floor a few times.

A few times recently he has asked where he is, and didn’t recognize parts of the house or even his own bedroom, but last night Colette went into his room to check on him and he was sitting on the side of the bed up close to the wall. He was afraid and cowered into the wall. She came and got me, and we asked him questions about family and things to see how bad he was  He didn’t know where he was or who any of us were. He didn’t even know who he was. He wouldn’t let us get very close and kept telling us to get away. All the questions and trying to help him, even with a blanket or food, just made him more scared. So eventually we just let him be and I sat over on the other side of the room and Colette went out. After several attempts he got himself up and walked out into the livingroom. I followed him around not making any noise so he wouldn’t know I was there. He went into the kitchen and found a small tomato from the garden and ate it like an apple, he didn’t seem to be so scared anymore, but was startled by the water coming out of the faucet when he tried to rinse the juice off his fingers. He then walked over to the sliding glass door. I was afraid he was going to try to go out but when he saw our cat on the back porch he made a loud sound like he was trying to scare her…it was so startling to us all we had to laugh. He then went back into the livingroom and sat in his recliner for a few minutes and I sat on the couch. After a few minutes he got up and went into the bedroom…I left the lights off as not to startle him, and he went and got back into bed. I snuck some help in getting the covers on him in case he was still afraid. A few hours later he woke up, needing to go to the bathroom and was fine. He knew who we were and he knows today, too. I have a feeling this is going to start happening more often as time progresses.

We had contacted hospice a while back but they said he didn’t qualify yet, but his doctor thinks he might be ready now. So they have sent a referral in to them and we are waiting to hear from them. We will keep this blog updated.

Thanks for all your love and support!
